AVENGERS #263 - 1985

Published by Marvel Comics in 1986, Avengers #263 features “What Lurks Below?”, the opening chapter of the three-part storyline that begins Jean Grey’s return to the Marvel Universe. The story continues directly in Fantastic Four #286 and leads into X-Factor #1.

After an Enclave aircraft crashes into Jamaica Bay, Captain Marvel discovers a mysterious energy cocoon resting beneath the water. The Avengers recover the object and determine that a living being is hidden inside. Their investigation ultimately reveals that the cocoon contains Jean Grey, who was believed to have died years earlier.

Written by Roger Stern with artwork by John Buscema and Tom Palmer, this key issue helps establish the return of Jean Grey and the formation of the original X-Men’s new team, X-Factor. It also features Namor as an Avengers member and the death of the original Melter at the hands of the Scourge of the Underworld.
